Income/Expenses
Allowances to councillors are taxed as part of their overall income. I use the net payment to cover costs that include car fuel, planning submissions, stationary, mobile phone, etc. The mobile expenditure is also subsidized by an allowance and the Council facilitates elected members to minimise costs by including them in the corporate phone scheme. On average, pre-tax annual income for my role was €23,926. Given the economic decline, I decided to not take any of the council budget that is to cover travel and subsistence costs. I asked the Council to re-allocate some of these directly to eligble projects. The unused balance was absorbed back into the general budget to pay down the deficit. Since 2009, €26,798.94 of "my" expenses were re-allocated to other needs. This resulted in an average pre-tax annual income of €18,651.94. |
